"I's starin' at meh... Ah can feel it..."
Jawaa slowly turned the helm that resembled a dragon's head over in her hands.
Every time the glowing eyes came around she shivered. It was almost like the eyes were alive, and focused on her every time she turned it over. Placing the dragon's head over her own, she could feel a connection between the helm and her mind, something that both scared her, and felt good.
"I's like i's touchin' ma brain... wakin' up one part a' it, an' puttin anotha ta sleep... an' when ah take it off... tings go back de way dey was."
As Jawaa felt this strange connection between the dragon helm and her mind grow, she could fell stirrings in a part of her mind that had long since been dormant. The way she pictured the physical world through her blindness seemed to become clearer and detailed, as if she had her eyesight back. However in trade... the senses she had developed to compensate for her lack of sight dulled. She couldn't sense the feelings of her friends nearby, hear the world the same... but when she pulled the helm off, things returned to the way she had learned to live with.
"Ah wonda'... how much a' dis is jus' ma mind playin' tricks on meh?"
Again Jawaa placed the dragon's head over her own. Again the troll felt the changes in her mind. She waited and finally held her hands over her ears, so that she could no longer use the sound bouncing off everything nearby to picture everything around her in her mind.
She could see colors. She could see details. The dragon's eyes where sending to her mind what they saw. Jawaa wandered to the top of a hill and for the first time since the night she lost her eyesight saw the moon rising. She untied her blindfold and held it up... studying the now faded and cracked inking of the crescent moon over the cliffs of Mulgore that she had drawn just before she went blind.
"No.... dis isn' right... dis isn' a'pposed ta happen... Ah made dem a promise..."
Jawaa crouched on the ground and rested her head on her knees, covering it with her arms. She sat there for some time before pulling the hat off her head and turning it over in her hands again. The wind blew around Jawaa, whispering to the hunter what she already knew she had to do to keep her promise.
"Ah still don' regret it. I's still de right choice. Ah's still betta' off witout ma eyesight."
Once more she turned the helm over, until she felt the glowing eyes staring at her. She didn't hesitate as she began clawing at the eyes, tearing at the scaled leather that held the gems in the sockets. First one, then the other fell out, and Jawaa threw them in opposite directions. She picked up the helm again, turning it's now dark and empty eye sockets towards her. She felt nothing.
Slowly she placed the dragon helm over her head. She saw nothing. Whatever bond was being made was gone now. Jawaa didn't want it any other way.
"A'sides... learnin' ta shoot by sight again would take too long."
Slowly the tall troll hunter stood. Gathering her bow and quiver of arrows, she whistled for her tiger. After a moment of hesitation, she reached up and felt the empty holes in her dragonstalker's helm and sighed.
"It was nice ta see de stars an' de moon one las' time..."
Tying her blindfold over her eyes, Jawaa leapt down the hill, a grin crawling across her face. It was time to pick up the hunt.
